The Anne Brown Essay Prize 2026, presented by the Wigtown Book Festival, is set to open on 16 February 2026. This prestigious award offers £1,500 for the best literary essay by a writer in or from Scotland. 🏆 About the Prize

The Anne Brown Essay Prize celebrates outstanding literary essays on any subject. Whether your work explores literature, culture, memory, history, or personal reflection, the judges are looking for originality, depth, and strong craft.

The prize is open to writers aged over 16 who are:

▫️Resident in Scotland

▫️Born in Scotland

▫️Or have a longstanding association with Scotland

The judges’ interpretation of eligibility is final, and entrants unsure about qualification are encouraged to seek clarification.


📝 Submission Guidelines

▫️Word limit: 4,000 words

▫️Open: 16 February 2026

▫️Deadline: 15 June 2026

▫️Entry fee: None (Free to enter)

▫️Format: Submit each essay separately as a Word or PDF document

▫️Multiple entries: Allowed

▫️Anonymous submission: Your name must not appear on the essay or file name

▫️Entries must be emailed to: annebrownessayprize@wigtownbookfestival.com

▫️Include your contact details in the body of the email.

▫️A shortlist will be announced by 1 September 2026 on the Wigtown Book Festival website.


🚫 Important Rules

The organisers strongly welcome unpublished essays, but published work released no earlier than 1 July 2025 may also be submitted.

Artificial intelligence tools or large language models are strictly prohibited at any stage of the writing process. Entrants must declare that their submission is entirely their own original work. Any shortlisted or winning essay found to contain AI-generated content will be disqualified.
