Are you a budding scientist aged 14–16? 🧑‍🔬✍️ The Young Science Writer Award 2026 is now open! This national competition celebrates exceptional science writing from students across the UK. It’s your chance to explore a fascinating scientific idea, conduct research, and communicate it clearly, accurately, and creatively.

📚 About the Award

Now in its fifth year, the Award encourages young writers to:

🔬 Investigate a scientific concept that excites you

🧠 Apply critical thinking and research skills

✍️ Present your findings in an original, clear, and engaging essay

Selected winners, runners-up, and highly commended entrants will have their essays lightly edited by a journalist for national publication — a standard practice to ensure clarity and flow. 📰


🏆 Prizes & Opportunities

All winning and commended essays will be showcased nationally, with promotion on ABSW social media channels. Winners and some members of their school are invited to the awards ceremony at the Science Museum in London on Monday, 15 June 2026. 🏛️🎉


✨ Submission Requirements

📏 Word count:

 720–880 words (aim for ~800 words)


 🗣️ Include at least one quote from an expert in your chosen topic


📄 File format: 

PDF only (filename = essay title, no personal info inside)


🎓 Eligibility: 

14–16 years old, attending a state-funded non-selective UK school or home-schooled due to disability

⏰ Deadline:

 23:59 Thursday 19 March 2026
